16. Ecological balance of 2010

A common misconception about the perception of the environment is to believe that the Nature is eternal: our environment is actually impermanent, changing, evolving.

Within ecosystems, we exchange energy, mollécules, light. As the market economy, the economy ecosystem has its predators, speculators, its takeover bid.

One of the biggest takeovers market was the result of a particular species, Homo sapiens sapiens, the subspecies occidentalis had an unprecedented impact on other species before him.

This was followed by a crack when the ecological fur European, helped Native American tribes have almost emptied the land of boreal furbearers and game that fed travelers. The ecosystem-based economy collapsed beaver and gave way to another economy in which the hare who thrive in the nineteenth century on farmland and forest wastelands, played a major role.

Around my home in the forests near the village where the soil carries the scars of small drains and channels, the forest has dried up (a little). It is now made to the extent of the human foot, good news for walkers, bad for beaver, mink and American Bittern. These are are folded in the last beaver ponds found on the Point, or farther north, on the unorganized territory.

And through these great cycles, other smaller, annual, almost monthly. The year 2010 on the Point has been marked by an abundance of pork-epic, more numerous, or simply more visible. Foxes, rabbits and skunks have also been very active around my house. Wolves and bears, however, have been more discreet this year.

Especially, the year 2010 was marked by the facility on the Point of coyotes arrived in Following the deer. Two more southern species usually turn that benefit the agricultural decline to occupy new territories. And conversely, we saw in December, ptarmigan, grouse, also called white, come to feed on alders along the sled runners. A bit like in 2010, the north and south had decided to come to meet here in the boreal plains.
